Guide to slot terms

Every slot page in our database shows the same core numbers: the RTP, the volatility and the max win. They say a lot about how a game is built, but only if you know how to read them. In this guide we explain those terms properly once, so the slot pages themselves can stay short and easy to scan.

Each article combines the explanation with figures from our own selection of 399 slots with a fire, devil or hell theme. Those figures come from provider data and are rechecked periodically; examples and tables are calculated directly from that data, not from estimates.

Each article stands on its own. If you are starting from scratch, begin with RTP: volatility and max win fall into place after that.

RTP in slots: what return to player means

RTP is the share of all money wagered that a slot pays back over the very long run. It is a theoretical average the provider calculates from the game's maths, not a promise about your next session. You see the figure on almost every slot page, yet people regularly read more into it than it can tell them.

Slot volatility

Volatility tells you how unevenly a slot pays out. Every slot page in our database lists that level next to the RTP: low, medium, high or something in between. It does not tell you how much a slot pays back in the long run, but it does tell you how that amount is spread out: as a run of small hits, or as long quiet stretches with the occasional big spike.

Max win on slots

Max win is the largest win a slot's maths allows in a single game, expressed as a multiple of your stake: the number followed by a multiplication sign on almost every slot page. In our selection of 399 slots the median is 5,000×, and the highest published value is 100,000×.
